The Great Ziegfeld (1936)

The Great Ziegfeld is a fictionalized biography of the life and times of Florenz Ziegfeld which showcases a series of spectacular musical productions not least of which is the one below- the most breathtaking scenery for a musical number I have ever seen (and Busby Berkley had nothing to do with it!).

Due to copyright issues, the original song being sung, A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody, had to be dubbed over.

  1. Something about the musical numbers in the Great Ziegfield left me cold. They looked pretty and expensive but they lacked the imagination and fun of Busby Berkley.

  2. I see what you're saying. Busby Berkley was grand at using dance numbers and human bodies to create something unique. I appreciated the sequence above because even now, the opulence in it caught my attention. It was a sensory overload!
