Éirinn go Brách!
Today I honor the fine Irish character actor Barry Fitzgerald who acts in two of my all time favorite films, The Quiet Man and Bringing Up Baby. Born in Dublin, Fitzgerald treaded the boards until he came to Hollywood in 1936 for a role in another of John Ford's films, The Plough and the Stars. He enjoyed over two decades of film work before returning to his native country. He also goes down in Academy Award history for being nominated for both the Best Actor Oscar and the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the same performance, as "Father Fitzgibbon" in Going My Way.
Today on TCM!
